1. THE ECONOMY – Unfortunately for all of our sakes, the American economy seems fitting as the number one news story of 2009. The recession seemed to the backdrop of almost all news and discussion but we all have high hopes for a rebound in 2010.

2. OPRAH SAYS GOODBYE – Oprah announced that her talk show will be ending in September 2011. In the PR world, this is HUGE news. Arguably the most famous talk show host in America, Oprah has certainly left her mark on Chicago, the nation and the world. Whether Oprah’s goodbye is a PR stunt or for real, Chicagoans will just be happy to know they won’t be seeing Michigan Ave. closed down for a while!

3. THE KING OF POP DIES – Michael Jackson passed away on Thursday June 25, sending the world into shock and despair. Jackson will always be one of America’s favorite icons as well as one of the best selling artists in history. May he rest in peace. He will not be forgotten.

4. OBAMA – Americans welcomed President Obama into office when he gave his inauguration speech on January 20. America and Obama himself were shocked when he was awarded the Nobel Peace Price in October. All eyes and ears were on Obama again when he announced the healthcare reform bill. Only time will tell if Obama can meet American’s hopes of turning this country around.

5. SWINE FLU – The H1N1 virus, otherwise known as the swine flu, sent Americans into a fearful frenzy, with over 4,000 deaths from the virus recorded in the latest stats. The topic dominated health news including controversies over the vaccine.  We hope the story diminishes for all our health!

6.MOST POPULAR WORD OF 2009 – Social Media conquered all in 2009, when twitter was announced The Global Language Monitor word of the year. Beating out words like “Obama” and “H1N1”, the power of the tweet can not be argued.

7. OLYMPIC BID – “Back the bid! Back the bid!” High spirited Chicago natives were heard shouting this the morning of October 2^nd only to find out that Chicago was eliminated in round one for the Summer 2016 Olympic Bid. Approximately $50 million was spent on the campaign and Chicago didn’t even make it to round 2! What a bummer!

8. TIGER WOODS” GOLF’S GOLDEN BOY GETS CAUGHT- How could Tiger think that having numerous mistresses wouldn’t come haunt him? Tiger Woods will end 2009 with an embarrassing bang, going from hero to zero.

9. JOHN AND KATE DIVORCE - TLC’s show John and Kate Plus 8 was a huge hit, giving insight into the lives of loving parents who happened to have six sextuplets and twins. During Season 5 the Gosselin’s announced their divorce, leaving fans devastated to see their favorite family falling into another divorce statistic. Now with the huge media blitz and all of the scandals between the two the only question left is… Team John or Team Kate?

10.  BERNIE MADOFF – Ponzi crook Bernie Madoff was sentenced to 150 years in prison for defrauding investors of $65 billion, the largest swindle of money in American history and an extremely audacious move to make in the middle of a recession. We think he got what he deserved—a life in prison.

I’m here to tell you that Jimmy “The Shoe” Harrington got his nickname honestly. This story I am about to tell is both a tribute and a factual account to a man who was capable of driving and winning with any kind of  car whether it was a four-cylinder Yugo [if he could fit in it] or a death-trap Nova, which he did fit in one night.

So let me tell you about this car we built purposely for grudge racing on some of the back streets around here in Jersey.

Usually around here if I built a car, and people find out about it, I cannot get a race.

So I really wanted to find a race really bad, so I went out and found a rusted-out, s***-bomb Nova. It was a six-cylinder Nova that I bought from an old lady here in town, rotted out quarters and everything. It was a real beauty.

We put a 406 in there with steel heads and painted it Chevrolet orange. We did our best to make it look stock and if you opened the hood, it was the biggest piece of s*** you’d ever seen. The only dead giveaway was that there was nitrous oxide all over this thing.

You could only get a nine-and-a-half inch tire under it with an old flapper bar. It was very important that we kept this car looking as non-threatening as possible. The roll bar was essentially pop-riveted to the floorboard with silicone made to look like a welding bead.

There were three nitrous systems on the car because you couldn’t always leave the big one on all the time. You had to leave on a little one, shut that one off and get on another one. We had three switches and we duct-taped them to the bench seat of the car. There were so many switches and wires that it would have made an electrician suffer a heart attack at first glance.

There ain’t no way I’m going to drive this piece of crap death mobile. We tried a driver or two but no one could handle it.

Like a knight in shining armor, our driver just happened to walk through the door one day. It was Jimmy Harrington and he accepted the challenge without hesitation.

I gave him the rigged up driving instructions, if the tires break loose, you have to flip this switch. If that happens, you have to turn this knob. I think you get the picture here. But in that mess of wires and switch, Jimmy was like a fine tuned musician picking a guitar working those switches.

It’s been said before, there are drivers and there are passengers, and he was certainly a driver.

As it turned out, he was the only one capable of driving this piece of crap the entire track. He had it figured out in a few runs and bear in mind, while this is going on, he’s gotta shift this thing and steer. You had to give him credit, he drove it.

We went to test in E-town and they wouldn’t even pass it through tech. They had a tech guy there we called “Meatball”. Meatball didn’t like our car. We went to Vinny Napp who told us, “As long as you are bringing people in here to watch it, I’ll get you through. Just be careful.”

Meatball wasn’t having any of that.

He took his argument to Vinny who told him, “Leave those guys alone because you will end up in a trunk and dumped somewhere you don’t want to be.”

The car wasn’t supposed to even go ten seconds and ran a 9.40. This was back in 1988.

So we took the car over on Long Island and hung out at a hot dog joint. We can’t find a race until this Brian Prins guy comes along.

He brings a race car that ran 9.80 and agrees to run us. He trailered the car I would like to add.

So we shut the highway down, so the cops couldn’t get to us and there were about 500 spectators there to watch Jimmy the Shoe race Brian.

Harrington, or Harry for short, wins the race big time just as the cops descend upon us.

Harry takes off down the road and ends up in a neighborhood where he’s the minority. So we have the flatbed riding around trying to find him and he’s nowhere to be found in the pitch dark. Cops are everywhere.

Come to find out Harry had pulled the car down into the older lady’s driveway and she wasn’t keen on seeing a rather large white boy running around behind her bushes. He had jumped out of the car and ran, figuring as ugly as that Nova was, it would never be mistaken for a street racing car.

Well, the lady comes out of the house with a shotgun to investigate.

And I swear to you, only Harrington could pull this one off.

Within ten minutes of that meeting the gun-toting grandma had Harrington in the house, and even made him a sandwich. Are you kidding me? We’re out there trying to find him and that car and he’s in the house, laughing it up and eating a sandwich.

He had convinced her that he wasn’t feeling well and had to park for a little while and needed something to eat.

I don’t care what you say; Harry is the only one who could have pulled that off. The rest of us would have been shot at hello.

Police sirens all around, we’re searching frantically and he’s eating a ham sandwich.

When he finally walks out of the house WE SPOTTED HIM.

Here comes Harrington out of the bushes, can’t miss him … armed with a half a sandwich, waving at us. The lady is out there just a smiling.

We got the flatbed in there and loaded the car and got the heck out of Dodge.

When I tell you that no one else could have pulled that off but Harry, that’s no BS. He was that kind of  special person and never met a person that he didn’t consider a long lost friend. He was honest and genuine. That’s why when we won the last round of the War Stories, I knew a dedication to Harry was in order.

And, I’m sure when we go down there and match race Christian later this year, just as I am about to stage, I’ll look up and I’ll see ole Harry up there on a cloud, waving with one hand, with a ham sandwich in the other.

The campus is a model social service initiative that, upon completion, will bring together twenty 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations as partners who actively work together to build thriving communities by providing wrap-around services and support for at-risk families. RBN is the 15^th agency to join the revolutionary partnership.

 

The RBN Center will be completed in stages, looking at May 2010 for completion. Phase One is the implementation of the Ohio Benefit Bank and Reentry Bridge Network, Inc. reentry resource offices, opening on January 25, 2010. Phase Two is the opening of The RBN Center, a 5,000 square feet art gallery, performing arts center, community outreach center, and departmental offices. Phase Three is the expansive community garden and worm farm that will run along the side of the center.

 

Reentry Bridge Network, Inc. has been designing and facilitating non-traditional reentry initiative programs, special events, and community service projects inside Ohio prisons for over four years. The RBN Center will allow us to also provide programs to the families of the incarcerated. RBN continues to focus on new and better ways to reduce recidivism through bottom-up thinking and community involvement. RBN’s dedicated ethnographic field work continues to produce positive cognitive results within prison populations, which is reflected in successful reentry, healthier families, and safer communities. This is indeed important work!

 

It takes a community to reduce recidivism. We welcome volunteers and internships.

What is Yeast Infection
Vaginal yeast infection is the most common type of yeast infection and is caused by a fungus known as Candida albicans. In normal circumstances this fungus is present on the skin and inside the vagina of almost all healthy women. The acidic environment in the vagina helps check the growth of this fungus. It is when the acidic level drops down due a variety of factors ranging from menstruation, intake of antibiotics, steroids, and diabetes, that the fungus start multiplying and cause a vaginal infection. Improper personal hygiene too is a primary cause of vaginal yeast infection. It is rarely a serious condition but can be very uncomfortable.

Many women feel embarrassed to go to a physician for vaginal yeast infection and prefer to cure this fungus infection using some tried and tested home remedy.

Symptoms of Yeast Infection
It is estimated that over 75% of women suffer from vaginal yeast infection at least once in their lifetime. It is a minor problem that is cured within a couple of days for some, and some women are known to suffer from this fungus for years. It has been noticed that women who have vaginal yeast infection for years have usually not seeked medical help, neither have they tried out any proper home remedy to eradicate the fungus.

Some symptoms of vaginal yeast infection are
— An unusual thick, odorless, whitish vaginal discharge
— Unexplained pain during sexual intercourse
— Uncontrollable itching and a burning sensation in the vagina and the skin surrounding the vagina (vulva).
— Unexplained swelling of the vulva.
— Burning sensation during urination.

If you suspect that you have vaginal yeast infection and it is the first time, it is advised that you visit your gynecologist and get it checked. It may be some more serious type of vaginal infection or vaginal inflammation such as trichomonas, or bacterial vaginosis.

Home Remedies for Treating Yeast Infection
Vaginal yeast infection can either be cured orally or by vaginal insertion. Most of these home remedies have been tried and tested for their efficacy. You can usually cure yourself in the privacy of your home without the need to visit your gynecologist.

Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is a known natural antifungal. Pour a few drops of undiluted tea tree oil on a tampon and insert into vagina. Do this morning and night. A couple of days should be sufficient.

Garlic
Make a paste of garlic pods and apply to skin around the vagina. It may burn a bit, but is very effective. This paste can be used for yeast infection in other parts of the body too. Another way to use garlic for the cure of vaginal yeast infection is to cut a few garlic pods fine and wrap it in a cheesecloth. Insert into vagina for about 20 minutes leaving part of cheesecloth hanging out for easy removal.

Yogurt
Dip a tampon in yogurt and insert in vagina. Do this twice a day, once in the morning and at night till symptoms go away. Another way is to take a tablespoon of yogurt and inset into vagina. This is best done at night just before going to bed. Regular douching with yogurt has proved effective. Along with these cures it is also advised to eat plenty of yogurt. It is good for your entire system and will cure the fungus too. Buttermilk gives good results too. Drink a glass of buttermilk in the afternoon, and one at night.

Honey
This is probably the most sticky and uncomfortable way of curing vaginal yeast infection, but it is said to work wonders. Take half a cup of honey into the bathroom. Pour a liberal amount of honey on all affected portions, while sitting on the toilet seat. Be seated this way for about 20 minutes. After this you can have a bath with warm water. Dry the vaginal area thoroughly using super absorbent paper. You will feel much better. Do this twice a day, morning and just before going to bed at night.

Vinegar
Vinegar is renowned for its antibacterial and antifungal properties. Fill a bathtub with warm water mixed with 1 cup of vinegar. Soak in this bath solution for about 20 minutes. Dry the vaginal area thoroughly using super absorbent paper. Any vinegar will do, but the best results have been found using apple cider vinegar.

Precautions to Avoid Yeast Infection
Prevention is better than cure. Taking these precautions will ensure that you do not suffer from vaginal yeast infection.

— Avoid wearing clothing made of synthetic material.
— Avoid wearing leotards and pantyhose daily.
— Avoid wearing tight fitting panties.
— Avoid wearing tight jeans daily.
— Avoid remaining in wet clothes for too long.
— Wear clothes made of natural fibers.
— Wear well fitting cotton panties.
— Change wet clothes immediately to dry ones. Wipe yourself clean, especially the vaginal area with super absorbent paper.
— Avoid using sprays and perfumes in the genital area. Also stay away from deodorant sanitary pads and tampons.
— After using the toilet always wipe from front to back, never back to front.

Following all of these should ensure that you never have to suffer and treat yourself for vaginal yeast infection ever again.
